I'm in love with the first 365 episodes. The storyline shifts after that (no spoilers here, I promise), and I haven't watched beyond that point yet, so I cannot speak to its quality.
Audio
I would like to attempt a basic audio standardization and clean-up. I'm not an audio engineer, but I can experiment with Audition's tools and follow YouTube tutorials like anyone else. The dialogue needs more clarity—removing some age-related artifacts would help, and many episodes desperately need de-essing treatment.
Video
Additionally, I could make some visual improvements to the footage while preserving its retro charm.
The series begins as a beautiful example of live black-and-white television. As the show evolves, it transitions to color—sometimes. Curiously, even after becoming a color show, many black-and-white clips appear. Initially, I thought this footage might be from earlier recordings, but that explanation became less plausible over time. My current theory is that they used older equipment as backup units.
The color adds nothing to the show and has provided no benefit thus far.
For various reasons, especially with a show as preservation-challenged as this, even footage shot on the best silver film ABC could afford will develop tints through time and transfers. Both the monochrome and color footage suffer from poor color quality. The black-and-white sections range from light musty yellow to water-damage blue—an effect that's more disorienting than charming.
I believe we should apply a correct desaturation method (preserving contrast, a method I know very well from my photoshop pro era) to all 365 episodes. This would create consistency, maintain the show's tone, and significantly improve overall quality.
Closed Caption Corrections
I've already got a ton of the subtitles underway.
